have led to the formation of several independent companies. Xerox has maintained an
ownership interest in many of them. Some of the companies founded on Xerox technology
include:
- ContentGuard Inc., www.contentguard.com. Launched in 2000, is now majority owned by Microsoft Corp. and Time Warner Inc, with Xerox holding a small interest. The company's digital rights language - XrML (eXtensible rights Markup Language) - helps businesses create applications that assign access rights and services to a range of online content, thereby protecting intellectual property. ContentGuard is driving the adoption of XrML as an industry standard.
- Document Sciences Corp., www.docsciences.com. Established in 1992, it provides content automation software and services that help companies better communicate with customers through personalized and customized documents. It is publicly traded (Nasdaq: DOCX).
- Documentum Inc., www.documentum.com. Established in 1990, it helps clients create and manage all types of content - documents, Web pages, XML files - using one common content platform and repository. Xerox gradually reduced and then sold its stake in 1999. The company is publicly traded (Nasdaq: DCTM).
- dpiX LLC., www.dpix.com. Launched in 1996, it brought to market thin-film transistor technology. dpiX designs and produces amorphous-silicon sensor arrays that replace x-ray film and bulky image intensifier tubes in real-time fluoroscopic imaging applications.
- Inxight Software Inc., www.inxight.com. Established in 1996, it develops software products that make it easier to navigate the Internet and repositories of electronic information.
- PlaceWare Inc., www.placeware.com. PlaceWare Inc. was formed in 1996. It became the first company to introduce Web conferencing for holding meetings over the Internet.
- ScanSoft Inc., www.scansoft.com. Created in 1997, it supplies digital imaging, document automation, speech and language solutions that can automate a wide range of manual processes. It is publicly traded (Nasdaq: SSFT).
