Xerox Gives Back with Local Tech Drives

Xerox takes great pride in our sustainability and energy management efforts across our business. We’ve long believed that it is our responsibility to not only do what’s best for the company, but for people, the environment and society. This core value not only guides our approach to our own operations, but how we support our customers and communities as well.

That manifested itself last spring as part of a tech donation drive across multiple Xerox locations, including San Diego, Calif., Norwalk, Conn., Cary, N.C., Webster, N.Y., and North Canton, Ohio. Participants could stop by any of the five sites to drop off old electronics such as tablets, computers or laptops, MP3s, iPods, and more.

All donated items were refurbished by Human-I-T whose mission is to “eliminate the world’s fastest-growing waste stream – e-waste – while also empowering communities with the technology they need to thrive”. Refurbished items were provided to those less fortunate in the areas the items were collected. These refurbished devices provide recipients access to digital services rather than having to travel to receive similar services, saving time, and energy use, and increasing equity. Anything unable to be refurbished was responsibly recycled. “Recycling old electronics doesn’t just help the environment by preventing devices from ending up in landfills, but it also helps those in need,” said Zola Howard, HR Program Manager, and leader of the tech drive. “It’s a simple, but truly impactful way to give back.“

More than 1,800 pounds were donated.

This tech drive was a great way to continue our legacy of responsible materials management as well as provide technology to those in need in the communities in which we work and live. In addition to helping under-resourced communities, the tech donations extend the life of the devices, saving energy and reducing carbon emissions.

Activities such as these are core to Xerox’s goals for a more sustainable future. We are proud of our accomplishments and the external recognition we have received for our programs, including Gold status from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) Electronics Challenge Award, Corporate Knights’ most sustainable businesses and ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year Award
